In this class (the first in an ongoing series of traditional Buddhist classes), we will introduce meditation as the path following the Buddha as the example of “the one who awoke”. Taming the Mind in the present moment, we gently explore the challenging, joyous, and creative qualities of mind in meditation. Like the Buddha, we “wake up” to what is real, to true nature. Please “come as you are” – experienced or inexperienced in meditation.

The class will be taught by Eric Shaffer, a senior student of the Shambhala Buddhist Lineage.

SPRING 2008

EMPTINESS
Tuesday evenings, April 8th through May 6th, 2008.
Sitting Meditation 6: 00 to 7:00. Class - Currently full.
Our course on Emptiness is open to people who have no experience of meditation or Buddhism, and also to those who have entered into the journey of meditation. The Heart Sutra is the root text for our study of Emptiness as ordinary, daily life experience. We will also consider the profound meaning of Emptiness as commented upon by such great teachers as Chogyam Trungpa, Rinpoche, Sakyong Mipham, Rinpoche, and Pema Chodron.

The Heart Sutra is understood to have been taught by the historical Buddha. He taught that the utter absence of ego does not negate the vivid appearance of basic goodness. By studying and contemplating the sutra line by line, mixing view with practice, and reflecting on experiences of emptiness in our everyday experience, this course brings these esoteric teachings to life..
